L McConnell Being of Service

One thing I love about our small community is that there are so many ways to get involved and contribute our time, talents and treasures for the betterment of each other.

Last night I had the opportunity to visit with the Sechelt Rotary evening club, and I was impressed with what they are doing, here and around the world... right down to the way they do their pass-the-glass end of meeting collection, with…

Menno van Driel Is it easy these days to qualify for a mortgage?

These days, it’s not so particularly easy to qualify for a mortgage. You have to have your down payment, a good income and a strong credit record resulting in a high credit “score”.…

Lower mortgage rates help qualify you for a larger mortgage loan. Because the payments will be lower, you could actually borrow more money and purchase a more expensive property.

Menno van Driel Sunshine Coast real estate market activity for July 2011

The Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board (REBGV) just published its monthly report on market activity in our area. The long and short of the article is that the market remains “balanced” between buyers and sellers.

Real Estate Board of Vancouver publishes the most recent market statistics including those for the BC Sunshine Coast. There is talk of a balanced market being good for buyers and sellers.

The Real Estate Board publishes a packet of market…

L McConnell On Mowing

WHY CAN'T YOU BE A GOAT, HEY?

We've got a .49 acre (half an acre, to y'all) half arrowhead lot in West Sechelt. It used to be a BC Hydro pole storage location, which accounts for the odd shape of the lot and why we're surrounded almost entirely by other…

Teresa Nightingale Local entertainment on April 2nd?

I'd like to tell our visiting race participants about local entertainment on Saturday night next weekend, does anyone have info on "what's happening"? I already know about the Bernie G show and the Film Fest and the SC Museum & Archives, anything else? I couldn't find much online. Thanks.

Teresa Nightingale Volunteers wanted for Fools Run

Looking for a few more folks to join our RACE CREW at the 34th annual April Fool's Run on Sunday April 3rd. It's a great way to be close to the excitement of race day if you're not actually running it. See the elite athletes up close, cheer for your friends, encourage the hardy souls at the back of the pack! It's a lot of fun, and you get a "Race Crew" t-shirt and a chance to win a draw prize (we have quite a few).

We have positions available for: course marshals, water station…

L McConnell A Heckuva Hike in Hidden Grove

Wow - if you want a GREAT walk in the woods with your furry friend(s), take a trip up Sechelt Inlet Road to Hidden Grove Park.

I've hiked this park for about 6 years now and it just keeps getting better. One of the best examples of the right way to do trail signage on the Coast: at every. single. junction. a laminated map is posted with clear markings to show you where you are. At one point today, Diane and I thought we'd take a shortcut back to the lot, and I had this nagging…

Gary Little Sunshine Coast History: 1789

Were the Americans the first to visit the Sunshine Coast, beating the Spanish here by 2 years and the British by 3 years? I've written a story about this -- see WERE AMERICANS THE FIRST TO VISIT THE SUNSHINE COAST IN 1789?

As usual with my historical articles, it highlights an old map from my collection, this one from John Meares in 1790.

Lorna Ketler Shop Local - it does a body (and your community) good!

As we approach mid-January and retailers everywhere are grasping for new and innovative ideas to get people to shop, I think it might be time to remind the buying public why it's important to shop local and to support their favourite businesses...even in January! There's so much information out there about how to pinch a penny, get a discount, shop "smart" and save money, but I haven't seen too much written about why it's important to shop at and support local, independent businesses. The most… Continue

L McConnell Gibsons Grits: Go Wild, A Bistro on Wheels, and Views by the Halfshell

Man, oh man. I just got back from two weeks in France where we spent one week sightseeing in Paris, and the second week beach hopping in the French Mediterranean and then winding our way up through Provence.

I had heard for years about french food - the intricacies, the giant salads couples lingered over in sidewalk brasseries - and was fairly licking my lips to try it out when we departed in late June. I was travelling with my partner, Diane, who was 'conferencing' the first week,… Continue

L McConnell The Sunshine Coast now has its very own botanical garden!

On Monday, June 29th, the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden Society purchased the 40-acre property located at 5941 Mason Road. This was made possible by the generous donations of individuals and businesses who share the vision of a centre for horticultural learning in our community. These donations formed the down payment, and the Society will now continue to fundraise to pay off the mortgage as quickly as possible. Of the $1.6 million fundraising goal, $321,000 has been raised so… Continue

L McConnell Food, Art, Fish, Friends & Fences

What a lovely ramble we had this morning, spelunking the Coast's highways and biways in search of treasure trove... and we found it! First we stopped in (heck it was the reason for the entire adventure) at the Film Set Costume Sale hosted by Sandra Buck in Gibsons. I drove up and thought 'Aw, that looks like regular flea market stuff,' but once we… Continue

Lee Ann Johnson Friends of Forage Fish

I'm off to look for fish eggs this afternoon. Those little leaping smelts actually lay their eggs in gravely sand during a high tide right between the low and high tide lines. The egg survival is greatly assisted by having overhanging trees and shrubs that prevent the eggs from cooking in hot summer sun. This turns out, unfortunately, to be a relatively rare situation since we humans like to chop down the green stuff growing along the waterfront, especially along the pricey "low bank… Continue
